There is a particular kind of loneliness that can be difficult to explain.

It isn't the loneliness of an empty house or a quiet afternoon.

It is the loneliness of sitting amongst family or friends, smiling through conversations, attending social gatherings, and yet feeling as though no one truly knows you.

Perhaps you've experienced it.

You laugh when everyone else laughs. You ask how everyone else is doing. You carry on with your responsibilities, yet deep inside there is a quiet ache that whispers,

"Does anyone really see me?"

If you've ever felt this way, I want you to know something before we go any further.

You are not alone in feeling alone.

It is one of the most common soul questions I have encountered over the years, and it often has very little to do with how many people are in our lives.

When We Become Strangers to Ourselves

Modern life asks a great deal of us.

We become parents, partners, carers, professionals, volunteers and friends. We meet deadlines, pay bills, solve problems and support those we love.

Without even noticing, we can spend years becoming everything everyone else needs us to be.

Little by little, we stop asking ourselves one very important question.

"How am I?"

Instead, we ask everyone else.

Eventually, something begins to feel missing.

Not because we've failed.

Not because something is wrong with us.

But because we have slowly drifted away from the quiet, authentic part of ourselves that has always known who we truly are.

When that happens, loneliness isn't simply about other people.

It becomes a longing to reconnect with ourselves.

The Masks We Wear

Most of us wear masks.

The capable one.

The strong one.

The one who always has the answers.

The one who never asks for help.

Perhaps you've become so good at wearing your mask that even those closest to you believe it.

Yet beneath that carefully presented version of ourselves often lives someone who simply longs to be accepted exactly as they are.

The irony is that the more perfect our mask becomes, the more invisible our true self can feel.

No amount of company can fill that space.

Because what we long for is not more conversation.

We long for genuine connection.

A Shaman's Perspective

In many indigenous traditions, healing begins with remembering.

Not remembering facts.

Remembering ourselves.

Shamanic wisdom teaches that we are never separate from life.

We are part of Nature.

Part of Spirit.

Part of something infinitely larger than ourselves.

Yet modern life often encourages us to live almost entirely in our minds.

We become disconnected from the Earth beneath our feet.

From the rhythms of the seasons.

From silence.

From wonder.

From the whispers of our own soul.

When these connections weaken, loneliness often follows.

Not as a punishment.

But as an invitation.

Our soul gently calls us back.

Back to ourselves.

Back to what truly matters.

Nature Never Forgets You

One of the reasons I have always been drawn to shamanic practice is because Nature asks nothing of us except that we arrive.

A tree doesn't ask you to be more successful.

The ocean doesn't care how productive you've been.

The wind doesn't judge your mistakes.

The Earth simply receives you.

There have been moments in my own life when sitting quietly beside the ocean or walking through the bush has brought more comfort than a hundred conversations.

Nature has an extraordinary way of reminding us that we belong.

Not because we have achieved anything.

But simply because we exist.

Perhaps that is one of her greatest teachings.

You have never needed to earn your place here.

Loneliness Can Become a Doorway

As uncomfortable as loneliness can be, it sometimes arrives for a reason.

It asks us to pause.

To stop seeking constant distraction.

To notice where we have abandoned ourselves in order to meet the expectations of others.

It invites us to begin a different relationship.

Not with another person.

With ourselves.

This is rarely dramatic.

It begins with tiny moments.

Five quiet minutes.

A walk without your phone.

Watching a sunrise.

Sitting beneath your favourite tree.

Listening instead of filling every silence.

These small acts slowly rebuild the bridge between your heart and your soul.

A Gentle Practice

If you have a quiet moment today, step outside if you can.

Sit beneath a tree.

Walk beside the ocean.

Rest your hands upon the Earth.

Take a slow, gentle breath.

Place one hand over your heart and ask softly,

"Where have I been withholding my own presence?"

Don't force an answer.

Simply notice what arises.

Feel the breeze upon your skin.

Listen to the birds.

Notice the rhythm of your breathing.

Allow yourself to remember that Nature has never forgotten you.

Spirit has never abandoned you.

And your soul has patiently remained beside you through every season of your life.

Walking Forward

If these words have found you today, perhaps they are a gentle reminder that loneliness is not a sign that something is wrong with you.

Perhaps it is your soul quietly inviting you home.

Not home to a place.

Home to yourself.

As your relationship with yourself deepens, something beautiful often begins to happen.

The world itself may not change.

But your experience of it does.

The loneliness softens.

The silence becomes peaceful rather than empty.

And gradually you begin to realise that you were never truly alone.

You had simply wandered a little way from your own heart.

The path back has always been there.

One gentle step at a time.

With love,
