Long before telescopes and science textbooks, our Aboriginal Elders looked upward—not just to see the stars, but to read the spaces between them. For countless generations, they have known that the night sky is not just beautiful; it is alive, infused with spirit, story, and sacred instruction.
They speak of the Dreaming—when the world was soft, malleable, full of magic and potential. In this sacred time, ancestral beings shaped the Earth, the stars, and the laws of life itself. And those stories are written not just in ochre on rock, but in the constellations above us. Aboriginal astronomy is not about naming stars—it is about navigating life through the sky's teachings.
They track the emu in the dark spaces of the Milky Way. They tell time, read seasons, and guide ceremony with the rising and setting of celestial bodies. Where Western minds focus on the stars themselves, Aboriginal wisdom focuses on what lies between—the unseen, the relational, the invisible threads that weave the cosmos together.
In my own dreaming work, I feel the pull of this wisdom. As we lie under the stars, as we breathe and soften and surrender to sleep, we are invited into a space between. A space where our ancestors may speak, where the land breathes with us, and where the stars themselves become our teachers.
I dream of one day sitting quietly with an Elder, letting their stories shape the way I see and feel the sky. Until then, I honour their deep knowing and invite you to do the same. Let the stars be your sacred map. Let the darkness between guide your inner light.
