“Somewhere along the way, I disappeared.” It is one of the quietest and yet most profound questions a person can ask.
The Soul’s Questions
Why Do I Feel Like I’ve Lost Myself?
“Somewhere along the way, I disappeared.”
It is one of the quietest and yet most profound questions a person can ask.
Perhaps it comes after years of caring for everyone else. Perhaps it follows the end of a relationship, the loss of a loved one, retirement, illness, burnout, or simply waking one morning with the unsettling feeling that life has become something you are living rather than truly experiencing.
You may still smile. You may still go to work. You may still fulfil your responsibilities.
Yet beneath it all there is a whisper:
“This isn’t really me anymore.”
If these words resonate with you, know that you are not alone.
The Hidden Invitation
From a shamanic perspective, feeling lost is not always a sign that something has gone wrong.
Sometimes it is the soul gently asking you to stop living on autopilot.
Modern life encourages us to become experts at doing. We achieve, perform, care for others, solve problems and meet expectations. Over time we can become so identified with our roles that we forget the deeper essence beneath them.
The parent.
The partner.
The employee.
The carer.
The healer.
The achiever.
These roles may all be true, but they are not the whole of who you are.
Eventually the soul begins to knock.
Not to punish us, but to call us home.
🌿 Soul Pause
Before you continue reading, take one slow breath.
Place a hand over your heart and simply ask:
“When was the last time I truly felt like myself?”
Don’t search for an answer.
A Shaman’s Perspective
In many ancient traditions, periods of feeling lost were not viewed as failure.
They were recognised as sacred thresholds.
The old identity no longer fits, yet the new one has not fully emerged.
It can feel confusing, lonely and uncertain because the familiar ways of being are dissolving before the next chapter reveals itself.
Nature reminds us that this is how transformation unfolds.
The caterpillar must completely dissolve before becoming the butterfly.
The forest sheds its leaves before new growth appears.
Even the moon disappears into darkness before returning to fullness.
Why should we expect our own lives to be any different?
Perhaps you have not lost yourself at all.
Perhaps you are shedding a version of yourself that has carried you faithfully until now.
The Soul Never Leaves
One of the greatest misconceptions is that we have somehow become broken.
The truth is more compassionate.
Your deepest self has never abandoned you.
It waits patiently beneath the noise.
Beneath the endless thinking.
Beneath the expectations.
Beneath the fear of disappointing others.
Like a spring hidden beneath the earth, it has continued to flow even when you could no longer hear it.
The journey is not about becoming someone new.
It is about remembering who you have always been.
A Gentle Practice
Today, give yourself twenty quiet minutes.
Leave your phone behind.
Walk slowly in nature if you can.
Notice the trees, the wind, the birds, the clouds.
As you walk, ask only one question:
“What part of me is longing to be remembered?”
Do not force an answer.
Simply listen.
Sometimes the soul speaks through words.
Sometimes through tears.
Sometimes through a feeling of peace that arrives without explanation.
Trust whatever comes.
Walking Forward
Every authentic spiritual path is, in its own way, a journey of remembering.
Remembering your connection to the Earth.
Remembering your inner wisdom.
Remembering your place within the great web of life.
The ancient Vision Quest was never about escaping the world.
It was about stepping away from the noise long enough to hear the quiet voice of the soul once more.
You do not need to have all the answers today.
You need only be willing to ask the question.
Because perhaps the moment you believe you have lost yourself is the very moment your soul begins leading you home.
Reflection
Have you ever experienced a time when you felt you had lost yourself?
What helped you begin remembering who you truly are?

If This Question Has Been Living in Your Heart…
Sometimes the greatest act of courage isn’t finding all the answers.
It’s creating the quiet space where your soul can finally speak.
For thousands of years, the Vision Quest has been a sacred practice of stepping away from the noise of everyday life and listening deeply to the wisdom that has always lived within. While few of us can spend four days alone on a mountain, the essence of the Vision Quest remains as relevant today as it has ever been.
If this article has stirred something within you, I invite you to explore my Personal Transformation Through a Shamanic Healing Vision Quest online course. Together we’ll gently explore ancient practices, guided journeys and reflective exercises that can help you reconnect with your own inner wisdom and remember the path your soul has been quietly calling you towards.
You haven’t lost yourself. You are simply being invited to remember.
Your soul is always speaking. Sometimes all we need is the courage to listen.
